From the first time I encountered Ham in 2nd Form at Groton, he was so energetic it was impossible to keep up with him. It was like there was nothing and no one who could stop him, and who the hell would have wanted to? He was almost always grinning, and was quick to join in whatever fun was going on; the rougher and rowdier the better. Ham was instrumental in my dropping out of 2d Form Club Football. He was like a steamroller when he got the ball, and every time I attempted to tackle him, I ended up on the ground feeling like a stampede of buffalo had run me over. So, I can thank Ham for my decision to join the newly created running team that fall. Ham was my 5th Form roommate in Johnson’s dorm, and I once asked him about a small and almost perfectly rectangular albino patch of skin he had on his midriff. He grinned and told me that it was from the butt-end of a hockey stick that he’d been jabbed with. He said, “It kind of hurt a lot, but I got that (expletive omitted) guy back.” Ham was very serious about studying, and I recall occasionally irritating him when he had his nose in a book and I was being a slacker and distracting him, but then later he’d crank up his stereo to blast Van Morrison or the Tubes or whoever he was into that month and we’d jump and laugh and howl along with the music. Ham was a somnambulist – but he didn’t sleep walk – he sleep ran. He’d jump out of bed, blast out the room and tear down the hall, then burst back through the door a few moments later and jump back in bed, fast asleep the whole time while I was futilely yelling his name and getting no response. That’s how I will always remember Ham: As a rolling ball of irrepressible energy, even when he was sound asleep.

Ham lived in the cubicle directly opposite mine during our eighth grade year at boarding school. Ham often had a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin on his face. These were so infectious that they remain nearly as vivid in my mind today as they were more than forty years ago.

Deepest sympathy to Ham’s beloved family and friends. Ham was one of my form-mates at Groton, and though I did not know him well, he stands out brilliantly in my memory for his consistent kindness and extraordinary equanimity. He had a rare and delightful gift for making others feel welcome and at ease. It was always a pleasure to be in his presence. Wishing tremendous peace to all as we mourn this loss and celebrate Ham’s life.

Ham was a wonderful classmate at Groton. He was mischievous and energetic - always up to something. But the thing I will remember most about Ham was how kind he was. He was quick to laugh but not at the expense of others. I mourn his passing and hope he is at peace.

I'll always love you Ham. I wish I could have helped you more so that you'd still be here with us. I'll take great care of Tag and Winslow for you. We all miss you so much. We will always live in your honor and with your memory in our hearts and minds.
You & Mom are now both together, laughing I'm certain and I hope, proudly looking down at us all.
Love, Charlie

I met Ham when he was 10 years old. He was a friend of Bowan Howard. I met him again when his twin brothers were born. He loved being a big brother. He changed diapers and gave feedings. As his siblings grew he would show his love by cooking for them, attending their games and sharing in their lives. He was particularly close to his older sister Stapley. They had an unwavering bond and were best friends to the end.
Ham was smart, kind and funny. It is the laughter I will remember. His dry wit will make a room break out in laughter. I would laugh so hard I would become breathless. That he got from his mother. He was a wonderful husband and father. That he got from his father. I few months ago he told me what a fine childhood he had with loving parents and family.
Rest in Peace dear Ham

Ham
You were always smiling, laughing and fully enjoying all those people and the events around you. You had an infectious way of making people laugh and a wonderfully kinetic way of drawing people into your endeavors.
I will miss your energy, crazy, wavy blonde hair, and your ear to ear grin.
I will think of our memories together often.
Eric Walsh, MD classmate Groton, 1985.

I have a memory of this very soft spoken soul when he was home from college and I still can hear his very passionate and enthusiastic dialogue about what I can't remember now. His enthusiasm and passion have always stayed in my mind since that night in front of the fire in the study. Rest now precious child and know for sure that you are loved and that is eternal.
