Obituary of George Ofori-Amanfo

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With gratitude to God for a life well-lived, Dr. George Ofori-Amanfo went peacefully to eternal rest on December 30, 2021. Beloved husband of Celine (née Hammond) and adored father of Francis, Justin and Christian, through the many lives he touched, George will forever live in our hearts.

Born on April 4, 1962, in Accra, Ghana to John Ofori-Amanfo and Yaa Brenya, even from his childhood, George’s enchanting personality, intellect and kindness were apparent to those around him. As a young student, he excelled academically and thus it was not a surprise when he elected to pursue a career in medicine. After earning his medical degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, School of Medical Sciences, Ghana and completing his early post-graduate training at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana, George elected to pursue advanced clinical training in the United States.

Dually certified as a pediatric cardiologist and pediatric intensivist after training at Children's Hospital of New York, Columbia University, George was a pioneering leader in the field of pediatric cardiac intensive care and achieved international renown as a master clinician, educator and leader. Until his untimely passing, he served as the Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine in the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and at Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital. A lauded physician, generous mentor and consummate professional, George’s impact and legacy in medicine are both profound and enduring.

While he truly loved his patients and colleagues, George’s heart was his family, with whom he resided in Rye, NY. George’s happiest moments were spent traveling, celebrating and enjoying quality time with his family by his side. George deeply cherished Celine, the love and joy of his life. George and his wife Celine were blessed with their beloved sons Justin and Christian.

George was also survived by his eldest son, Francis, whose mother is his former wife, Lourdes Rodriguez. George was the second of four siblings and is further survived by his brothers Francis Ofori-Amanfo of Utrecht, the Netherlands and Stephen Ofori-Amanfo of Accra, Ghana.

George will be remembered for many things, including his pragmatic wisdom, equanimity and brilliant mind. Above all else, we will forever miss and treasure his charisma, joie de vi·vre and beautiful spirit.

We rest in the comfort that George is spending eternity with our Lord.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Graham Funeral Home, Rye, NY on Thursday, January 13, 2022, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday January 14, 2021 at 10:00 AM at the Rye Presbyterian Church.  The service will be livestreamed for those who can not attend in person.  To view the livestream, please click here. We thank you for the outpouring of love and support that we have received.
