Words of Remembrance in honor of Joe Pryor, written by his 6 children and read at his funeral service:
Thank you for being here today to help us celebrate the life of our dad, Joe Pryor. We, his six children, want to thank him for all he taught us.
He instilled in us the conviction to do things with integrity, to work hard, to love always, and hold family close. He saw us all as individuals and gave us the capacity to see others in this way. We learned so much from him, the way he lived his life by moral conviction and example… all the really important lessons that cannot be taught any other way.
Dad’s lessons were subtle and often imparted with an amazing economy of words, a skill that some of his children have failed to master. His motivational speech on the value of a college education continues to resonate: “You can major in anything you want OR you can major in drinking beer, but you can’t do both.”
We admire him for showing quiet strength with grace and dignity so many times over the years especially during difficult situations and changes in his life. We learned from him that actions speak louder than words. He was a man of few words, but by a look or a smile he spoke volumes. We loved his sense of humor and loved the way he looked at Mom. But, most of all, we loved the way his family always came first. We will feel his love always.
The values we learned from Daddy are the values that make us the people we are today. He gave us the skills to view the world with an open mind, an appreciation for diversity, and a love of life. We will miss his smiling face, sharp wit, corny jokes, and overly protective advice.
And if we had to sum it up, here are 10 life lessons From Dad:
1. Be a loving husband to your wife.
2. Be a loving father to your children.
3. Take your time and be patient.
4. Measure twice, cut once.
5. Organize your things on the dining room table in small piles.
6. Row your boat gently down the stream.
7. Keep your pocketknife handy. You never know when you'll need to save the paper.
8. Have your children help you rewire the house.
9. Stop at every yard sale to check out all that good stuff.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them.
And Daddy, we love you!
Oh, and Poppy... watch out for the wet leaves...
