Obituary of Dr. Alan Lyman Thain, MD

Dr. Alan Lyman Thain, MD passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023. He was born on January 30, 1928 in Lake Villa, IL, the second son of Lyman Thain and Anna (nèe Christensen) Thain. Alan grew up on Sunny Hill Farm with his older brother John. He loved life on the farm and often spoke of his pet pig, Roast Pierre. Alan graduated from Antioch Community High School in 1945 as the President and Valedictorian of his class. He attended the University of Illinois where he graduated in 1949 and was initiated into Phi Betta Kappa. He went on to Medical School at the University of Illinois and graduated in 1952 as a Doctor of Medicine. He then joined the United States Air Force and graduated from the School of Aviation Medicine.

Alan met Sophey Lazarton on a blind date in Chicago and they went on to marry on June 12, 1954 in England where Alan was stationed with the United States Air Force. In 1955, Alan and Sophey returned to the U.S. to live in Antioch, IL where they would reside for the next 68 years. Alan joined a successful medical practice in Antioch and was ultimately joined by his sons, Dennis and Robert, both doctors. Alan loved to hunt, fish, and tend to his garden. He also loved to travel and enjoyed the theater, opera, and playing cards.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Sophey; their three sons, John (Carmen), Dennis (Julianne), and Robert (Denise); eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Millburn Cemetery, 18550 W. Millburn Rd., Old Mill Creek, IL 60083.
