Jim is my father’s cousin, so for all of you ancestry nerds, David, Sally and Bob are my second cousins. We would see him two or three times a year at Christmas, Easter and assorted funerals, weddings and the like. He was a business junkie and always would ask me questions about my business. In the early 1980s it would be “Do you own a computer yet? What do you use it for?” Then in the 90s “Do you have a website”? Or, “Do you use trade shows to meet new customers?” Later, “Do you do any marketing through cellular telephones?” It was fun to share my experiences with him and listen to his stories about selling terminals and connectors. I am sure, had he reached 99 or 100, he would have been asking me about ChatGPT, and AI!
The other thing that we always seemed to talk about was tools and projects. He would ask if I had a compressor, or a drill press or have I ever tried a cordless blower. I might tell him about a new customer of mine that makes say a medical device for heart surgery and he would grill me with questions about how it works.
Uncle Jim always had a wink and smile, and seemed to be busy. He delighted in talking about family and projects at the lake house or a dryer to be fixed. Hopefully we can take from our memories of Jim that delight in just being with people we love.

Jim has always been our favorite Loudon Woods neighbor, ever bringing cheer to our picnics. Back in the 1970s, when he learned that a huge scale O model railroad occupied most of our basement, Jim generously supplied all manner of electrical connectors so the trains could run on schedule, putting Metro North to shame.

Jim was truly a great man. I had a running joke with him; one day while we were standing on line at a Rotary lunch meeting, he said "You know, I haven't even been to the office yet today." I responded: "That's the trouble with you young kids -- you have no work ethic." Jim was 84 at the time, and more energetic, productive, and active than many of us who were decades younger. Jim enjoyed life and cared about people. He was an inspiration in so many ways. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know him during my time in the Rye Rotary Club.

Dear Jane, David, Sally, Bob, and the whole Jackson and Tobin family. We are thinking of you and wishing you peace and comfort on this rainy Saturday morning as you are saying farewell to your dearest husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. But only for so long, I believe.
We met Jimm just a couple of times but we could tell immediately he was one of a kind - a unique strong personality that we instantly admired and were drawn to. I especially loved listening to him when he talked about his work and his business plans.
And so I have to share what I discovered some time ago - for several years, Jimm was immortalized on Google Maps (!), in front of the company he started, getting out of the car and going about his business as usual...
The other picture I love even more - Jimm and Jane, sitting in front of their house, on a summer Sunday afternoon, smiling and content. We will miss you, Jimm!

Mr Jackson and I had nice talks about business and life. He was wise, kind, honest and a hell of a business man. He loved to come into my auto parts store, Midland Truck & Auto Parts, and fix up the inventory and fill the shelves. It wasn't long ago that he would come in with his aid and a driver. He loved it!! He was a special person in my life and he won't be forgotten.

Over the years we appreciated Jim Tobin’s support of Sally’s art. Her talent got the family involved for helping to hang the art to showing up for the receptions and we imagine accepting praise on her behalf. We are sorry for your loss. During this time, we know you will be there for each other in ways big and small. We send our condolences and love. Laura and Roger Lavan

Thoughts of Jim bring smiles, remembering his affable manner and his great love for Jane and their wonderful children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He so enjoyed their nearby presence and took great pride and delight in their activities and accomplishments. He loved being surrounded by the family. I recall Jane's mentioning that he was never happier than when as many as possible would be there. Our family admired Jim for so many reasons: his military service, keen business sense, his gregarious nature and interest in all people, an inquiring mind, his welcoming greetings, and his philanthropy.
There was also a shared interest in old used cars where Ford and Jim liked to compare notes.
We send condolences and prayers for comfort to all of Jim Jackson.
Love always,
Neva, John and Kevin Winter

Memories of Jim Jackson, my cousin, by Alex Walker, as told to Virginia Walker:
Although Jim was nearly twelve years older than I, we were often thrown together in the summer when I spent time with my Uncle Jim and Aunt Harriet, Jim’s parents. Aunt Harriet taught music to Jim and Uncle Jim taught him a strong moral foundation of right and wrong which I think always was bedrock for Jim. Aunt Harriet was my father’s sister and she certainly made her voice known in many things. If Uncle Jim taught moral principles, Aunt Harriet laid down the law in the house at the top of her voice. Jim, somehow, navigated between these polarities with ease.
Cousin Jim loved gizmos and fixing things. I remember he fixed up a wooden-paneled station wagon for sale. He used special seat clamps. He always had a great car. I remember a powder-blue two-door Ford, about 1951, which we used for a double date. I also remember a 1949 Oldsmobile Business Coupe which he let me drive. I thought that was the best!
He had his own business which allowed him to come and go pretty much as he pleased. That was great when he bought the house in Rye and worked on it whenever he could. Jane, even when she was not feeling well, came with him to see the progress. I was doubtful that the mess he bought would ever look great, but he persisted and created a beautiful family home.
Jim was very flexible in his business ventures. I think that was the key to his success. If something did not work out, he would try something else and make a great go of it. My Uncle Jim was friendly with everyone—a trait passed on to Jim.
He was a bundle of energy and always welcomed our visits, showing us some improvement, he made to the house or some new building he was creating in the community. Only recently did I learn of all his work for the Rotary, but it was just like him to be deeply involved in his community.
He was so proud of his children and grandchildren. Twice we went to the Met Opera to see Dave conduct and we always heard the latest about Sally and Bobby. I expected Jim to make 98—wish he had. I will miss him.
Virginia and I offer all our sympathy to Jim’s family. I always thought that Jim was the center of all the energy in the family. There can never be another like him.
P.S. from Virginia: Jim was a marvel and always on the go. He was kind to Mrs. Walker, Alex’s mother and generous in all things. He did everything for Jane and was proud to be a great provider for his family.

There is a quote we like and it goes something like this. “At the end of life the questions are very simple. Did I live well? Did I love fully? “ J. Kornfeld
Indeed James Tobin did. He lived a long and fulfilled life and that is truly something.

Q: What 3 words best describe James and why?
A: Tough, loving, hardworking and extraordinary. I use these words to describe the late Mr. James because he was the toughest person I knew with a loving heart. He also had a strong will do things in his life.
This is a rainbow picture from Mr. James’ lake house in the Adirondacks. I share this because it’s how I feel about him. He shone bright and was an amazing human.
