Obituary of Helen Inglis

Helen Inglis passed away peacefully on April 26, 2022 at age 95. 

Born on April 26, 1927 to Earl A. Uebel and Leah McParlin of Rochester, New York, Helen led a studious and industrious life as an only child. The young redhead excelled in academics as evidenced by winning the Westinghouse National Science Award in her senior year of high school and graduating valedictorian. Also excelling in theater, she was the lead in the musical Peg O’ My Heart. The young scholar attended Albertus Magnus College on full academic scholarship for three years and completed her senior year at the University of Rochester where she also was valedictorian of her class while earning a B.A. in Drama and English. 

Helen began her career by reading parts in radio shows before moving to New York City. There she worked for Thomas Cook as the liaison between that office and Havana, Cuba. While visiting her parents at Christmas in 1953 the young professional was introduced to University of Rochester medical student Allan Inglis at a Christmas party. They married six months later and settled in New York City. 

As the young couple began their family, she was a copy editor for Morrow Publishing. Helen edited research papers of her husband Allan throughout his career as a surgeon, professor and researcher at the Hospital for Special Surgery. 

Helen and Allan moved their young family to Rye, New York in 1963. There they raised seven children, actively engaging them in sailing and numerous other recreational and cultural activities, while encouraging their divergent interests. She enjoyed sailing at the American Yacht Club on the family boats. She and Allan were also avid bird watchers, often searching for birds in Jamaica Bay early on cold Saturday mornings and traveling extensively for their hobby. She was a member of the Little Garden Club and other charities. She also actively participated in the neighborhood organization of Loudon Woods. 

She is best known for her voracious appetite for books and her intellect covering a range of subjects including history, literature, art, business and science. Incurably curious, she read at least two newspapers daily including the Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times. 

Mrs. Inglis is survived by her seven children: Allan Jr. of New York City; Jennet of Staunton, Virginia; James of Chappaqua, New York; Steven of New York City; Matthew of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Vicki of San Francisco, and Suzanne of New York City. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren: Peter, Jackie, Emily, Natalia, Eve and Luis. 

She will be remembered in a ceremony at the Church of Saint Augustine in Larchmont, New York on May 2, 2022 at 10:00 AM.
