Dear Darlene, David, and the entire Della Rocca Family,
Please accept our deepest Sympathy.
Bob was the greatest Mentor ever, not just in Oculoplastics, but in how to live your life, how to provide the greatest Surgical Techniques and provide the best Medical Care for all and any patient locally and from around the world. He lived this and portrayed this every day.in his life. He was involved in many Mission Trips with Darlene. He even mentor my daughter through her first Oculoplastic surgery in the DR.
He was the warmest and most generous human that I have had the privilege training with during my residency, and later of becoming such great friends with.
I love the photo that you posted. This is the face that I always looked forward to seeing every year at the AAO and the NYE&E Alumnae meetings. He always had that smile when he meet you. It was always so great to see him, and sit down and catch up on the past.
He was a true friend and mentor, and I have tears in my eyes as I write this. He will be greatly missed, and I am sure that he is in a better place now, and doesn't have to wear a mask.
Again I am blessed to have had my life touch by such a Gentleman of such Humility and Integrity.
Our Deepest Sympathy.

It is with a deep sense of loss that we mourn the life of Dr Della Rocca. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go to his lovely family . Dr Della Rocca was a luminary in our field of oculoplastics, having mentored countless students and residents throughout his long career. Besides his usual good humor and generous spirit, I particularly remember him for the work we did together helping first responders with emergency eye-care at a makeshift clinic at Stuyvesant on after 9/11. Dr Della Rocca showed up and worked for hours on end with great competence and humility. His presence will be deeply missed amongst his colleagues even as his son David competently carries forward the tradition of service to science and patient care. It has been an honor to have known him

His smile is something I will never forget, along with his leadership and compassion. Sending my deepest condolences to his family. We will miss him dearly.

Our deepest condolences go out to all of the Della Rocca family. I was fortunate to have spent two years at NYEEI as an oculoplastics fellow. Although I learned a tremendous amount in the field of oculoplastics from Dr. Della Rocca, I cherish most the lessons I learned from him about life and how to conduct oneself as a professional. He exuded great empathy for all his patients and was truly interested in their welfare and life stories. I am still inspired by his volunteer spirit that was evident in the Dominican Republic and other places. The long Fridays in the OR were not only a chance to hone my surgical skills, but I had the opportunity to listen to his endless stories of events that had transpired in his life, including growing up in the New York area and his time in Vietnam. His laughter was infectious and his passion for the Yankees and Giants led to great discussions about sports. In the end he was a great mentor, educator, physician, and friend. We will miss him.

Dear David and the Della Rocca Family,
I am saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Della Rocca. I was a resident at NYEE from 2009-2012. Along with David, Robert Della Rocca was my oculoplastics mentor and helped me immensely in my career development, inspiring me to go into the field of oculoplastics. Robert Della Rocca's influence in the field was instrumental in helping me obtain an oculoplastics fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. I often try to channel his cheerful bedside manner when seeing my own patients, and his generous and caring spirit when I teach residents, though I often fall short. I will always remember him for his support, inspiration and guidance. My deepest condolences to David and his family.

It’s with a broken heart that Today we say goodbye for now to one of the Great Ones Dr Robert C Della Rocca. The beautiful mass today celebrating his life gave me such joy after lots of tears. I feel so blessed
I was given a gift to have known him. I’m so So Very Proud to say I happily worked for Dr Robert and his son Dr David Della Rocca for the past 10 years. Along side his Wonderful wife Darlene as well. I first met Dr Robert in 1978-1988 when I worked @ Westchester Square Hospital. I admired him then. He was the “true gentle ~man”He had the greatest sense of humor and a beautiful singing voice. He even sang to his patients sometimes. He never lost the Bronx boy in him that made me love him even more, me still being a Bronx Girl. oh the fun we had. The greatest mentor. I learned so much from him. He made you feel you were the most important person in the room when you spoke with him. Once you met him You would Never Forget him. Fast forward to Jan 2010. was in the area of his Rye Brook practice. I came upon Dr Della Rocca’s office in the building I was in!!! I walked in to say hello. There he was sitting at the very same spot that would be mine later. After great conversation His dear friend Aurora his office manager hired me 2 weeks later. Now that is Fate. I love you Dr Robert. Thank you and your family for your kindness and generosity of self and spirit... Shine your light on us all! We need you more than ever... With lots of love and gratitude Colleen.

My most sincere condolences to Robert's family and in particular to his wife and son David. Bob, as many of us knew him, was a most sincere, honest and insightful friend. In addition to a wonderful clinical acumen he was gentle and kind to his patients and not incidentally, to his colleagues. I first met Bob in the 1970s when I was in the process of setting up the Department of Plastic Surgery at the I.nfirmary and he was of immense aid in that project providing great guidance through the negotiations with the hospital Medical Board. and in subsequent years he continued his interest in our Department with guidance in difficult clinical decisions. This was not to mention the fact that he was a great dinner companion after a long days work. While we shared so many important experiences with him professionally, our fondest memories were what it was like to simply hang out with him and just talk. He had a full life with so much to share. I first met the Della Roccas in 2015, as I was ending my Peace Corps time in the Dominican Republic. I volunteered as a translator for the ophthalmology mission (versus the other many missions available to Peace Corps volunteers), because of my own microphthalmia. I am forever indebted to this family for so many reasons- they showed me love and compassion and generosity and even got my prosthetic eye covered for me when I was fresh out of Peace Corps. I love and miss you dearly, Dr. Della Rocca. Thank you for showing us what it is to be a good human.
Love,
Sarah Twing

It is with a humble heart and big tears that I send my deepest condolences to Darlene, David and family members on the death of my dear mentor, Dr. Della Rocca. My experience as his fellow during 9/11 was most memorable and daunting. Dr Della Rocca was always kind, caring, thoughtful while he demanded and expected hard work, loyalty, and an appreciation. He was a fine surgeon but more importantly a good man. Whenever I question my abilities I think back to how he would do something and I I like to turn to something he wrote me when I graduated from my fellowship in oculoplastics so many years ago. May he rest in peace amongst the angels.

One of my most vivid memory of my many DR missions with Dr Della Rocca is that, at one of the candle ceremonies we usually start the missions with , Robert Della Rocca told the assembly that not one day had passed without him remembering his fallen comrades lost in Vietnam. Dr Della Rocca our loss is going to be their gain as you will be reunited with them in heaven. The VHP mission is going to miss you, I am going to miss you. You and Darlene have been my inspiration and my VHP FAMILY for over 20 years. GOD BLESS YOU ! REST IN PEACE ! WE WILL KEEP MAKING THE VHP MISSION ALIVE IN YOUR NAME.

A true mentor - always teaching and guiding and telling stories. He spoke the truth and believed in good. Truly honored to have been his fellow.

FROM Dr RAFAEL LOPEZ (SPAIN):
Dr Della Rocca was and will always be my mentor, the person who inspired me to fight for what i wanted and do so being a spotless human being. Even though will no longer be physically with us, I am sure VHP will live as his legacy of kindness and humanity. I can't see a better way to honour him then by renewing my commitment to VHP and its community.
Mu condolences to this blessed family that teaches us so much about the gift of giving, especially to Darlene and David.

One of the most gentle human beings have ever known - a mentor, a teacher and a kind soul. Supportive, encouraging and most kind. May his soul rest in peace.
