Obituary of Donald P. Kenney

RYE – Donald P. Kenney, a long-time resident of Rye, NY died of natural causes on Thursday, February 27, 2020 just three days shy of his 91st birthday. Don was born on March 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY to Theresa and Edward Kenney, Sr. He was the younger brother of Edward Kenney, Jr. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, Cooper Union College with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and earned his master’s degree at NYU. He met Margaret Mary (Peggy) McGovern in the early ‘50s and they married in 1956 in Brooklyn, NY. They had seven children, Donald, Robert, Eileen, David, Joseph, Brian, and Susan between 1957 and 1967. Don moved his family to Rye, NY in 1969 where they resided for 25 years. Don spent most of his career working for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company leading the Pensions Department, but he also taught computer science at Pace University, was the author of college level computer science textbooks, had a few years stint with Mobile Corp., and owned his own consulting business. He was very active in Rye and was known for his love of sports. He coached all his sons’ Little League and Babe Ruth teams, and could be seen each year marching in their opening day parades. He was a regular at his daughters’ basketball and lacrosse games and was always a welcoming figure to the many neighborhood friends. Don was predeceased by his wife Peggy in 1989; his granddaughter Moorea DesRoches in 2016, his partner Theresa Malone in 2018; and his son Robert in 2019. In addition to his seven children, Don is survived by sons-in-law Dan Zaccagnino, and Sean DesRoches, daugthers-in-law Amysue Kenney, Lata Kenney, Maura Kenney, and Cindy Kenney; grandchildren Sean Kenney; Brooks, Shea, and Reid Kenney; Cody, Kelsey, and Madison Zaccagnino; Amanda and Ethan Kenney; DJ and Lucy Kenney; Anand and Kiran Kenney; Colin and Isabelle DesRoches; and great-grandchild Isaac DesRoches. Visitation will be Monday, March 2nd from 4pm-8pm at Graham Funeral Home, 1036 Boston Post Rd. Rye, NY. Burial is Tuesday, March 3rd at 11am at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY.
