Vincent Byrne was a very special person in my life and until this morning I did not know he had passed away.
I met Vincent in 1996 when he was teaching at the community college. I was one of the foreign students and he was my teacher. He also lived up the street and because of that he offered me a ride back and forth from the evening classes. He had an old car with a seatbelt that automatically moved across the chest when you closed the car door. It was during those rides back and forth that our friendship began.
Vincent was a very special person to me. I could talk to him about anything and everything. I can still hear his voice, “My God Angelica! Are you 85 or what!?”. We would go for walks in the town park or along the boardwalk when we saw each other. When I went back to Sweden we kept in contact and whenever I came back to New York to visit I would give him a call and we´d see each other.
When I met my husband, I brought him to meet Vincent and when we got married, Vincent was invited to our wedding. Unfortunately, he was unable to come but when we spoke about it a couple of years later, he said, “Oh, yes, I had a couple of rough years there when I thought my life was over but now I´m good!”.
We always had such meaningful talks. He was not afraid to ask questions and was very gentle in the way he responded and when giving advice. He often mentioned his children, Nuala, Fiona and Brendan with great pride, warmth and sometimes a concern.
When I had children on my own, he was always interested in hearing how I was doing and how my family was.
Last time I saw Vincent was in spring 2014. We went for a walk and then had tea in his kitchen, and it was as if no time had passed since I last saw him.
For the last couple of days now I´ve had this funny feeling that I should go out on the internet and have a look at all the beautiful houses in the Rye area. It was a couple of years since I last did that. This was how I learned on Christmas day 2019 that Vincent’s house was on sale and discovered that Vincent had passed away.
I am so sad today. I so much would have loved to have one last cup of tea with him. Even though our age difference was 46 years I count him as one of the very special friends in my life. Even though he grew old his spirit never did and I always felt connected to his spirit.
I will forever be grateful to have known him. My thoughts go to his children and to the family. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am sure I will meet him again when I go to heaven one day but until then I will always miss him a bit and think of him with lots of love.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your father. I was in ESL class from 2011 to 2013. He taught me not only English, but also Irish and American culture. The meals on fhe wheels with him is one to the best experience in the US for me. He was absolutely the best teacher I ever had and I was fortunate to have him in Rye library. I will read "Esperanza Rising" which he recomemded us, again. I will miss him.

Vincent helped me to improve my writing when I arrived from France. He was a good man, the kind of person you wish to meet more often in your life: bright, cultured with a great sense of humour. I have lots of good memories of time spent with Vincent and his students coming from all over the world.
Vincent is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

He was gentle and kind to me. Thank you for teaching me English. He sometimes said jokes. Those made me smile. I never forget him. My deepest sympathy.

I have many sweet memories of Vincent, the Father of my dear friend, Fiona. He was always so personable and truly interested in my life, what I was doing and where I was going. He had an infectious laugh and his sparkling, soulful eyes shined love and connection to spirit. Sending so much love to the entire family!!!!
