Obituary of Philip Charles Beers
Philip C. Beers passed away peacefully on August 10, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born in Rochester, NY on August 24, 1932, the son of Raymond and Christine Barker Beers. Philip graduated high school in 1950 from the Aquinas Institute. Upon graduation, Philip moved to Windsor, Ontario Canada and became a Catholic priest, studying with the Basilian order. While he was in Canada, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from University of Western Ontario in Windsor and his PhD in Developmental Biology from the University of Windsor.
In 1973, Philip left the priesthood and moved to New York City to begin work in research biochemistry and education. He was a research associate at Columbia University/Roosevelt Hospital New York in the 70’s; Director of the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Laboratory and Perinatal Laboratory at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in the early 80’s; and a Research Biochemist at Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island, NY in the 90’s. Philip was a professor at Fordham University at Lincoln Center from 1973-1985 and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at City University of New York from 1983-1985. Upon leaving research, he became a teacher of high school physics, chemistry, biology and general science in the New York City public schools as well as at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry.
Soon after Philip left the priesthood and moved to New York City, he met Sally Harrington. They were married in July of 1974 and had one daughter, Christine. As a family they first lived in Scarsdale before moving to Rye. He has lived with his wife in the Blind Brook Lodge in Rye for the last 24 years.
He loved to garden, paint with watercolors, fish (though was often seasick) and hunt. He also loved to do any and all home repairs, regardless of how long a ladder was needed.
Philip is survived by his wife, his daughter and her husband Ian Weston of Scarsdale, as well as two grandsons, Sam and Miles Weston. He also leaves behind his brother Edward Beers and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye on Monday August 13, 2018 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection on Tuesday August 14, 2018 at 10 AM.
