Dick Cassetta was a valued colleague and friend who fought the good fight against secularization of what was once a Catholic college. The decline into faithlessness of Catholic colleges was analyzed by James Burcthaell in the Dying of the Light.. A chapter in that book is dedicated to CNR's infamy. What happened? Whatever it was a generation of Catholic priest and religious women were attracted to European socialism and Democratic politics. But what of the resistance that Catholic faith grants to the faithful against the viruses of Progressive ideology. Dick Cassetta and I and a handful of lay faculty fought this trend and Dick saved my job by working on the Rank Tenure and Salary Committee to assure I earned academic tenure. I last saw Sr. Dorothy Ann Kelly at the White House in 1981 where I offered to help CNR in relations with the Reagan Administration. RIP Dick, you fought a valiant fight.

My deepest condolences to the family of Professor Cassetta. I am a CNR class of ‘93 graduate and had classes with Professor Cassetta. My favorite memory of him is when I had an Organic Chem exam, a class I struggled with. As I gave him the exam, I stated with tears streaming down my face “Go ahead & fail me. I was irresponsible & went to a Billy Joel concert in Albany last night.” His response, “When do you think you’ll be ready to take this exam”.
When I think of who contributed to my great experience at CNR, Professor Cassetta plays a large role.

I am so very sad to learn of the passing of Richard Cassetta. I was a Day Student at CNR '69 and had occasion to share occasional rides with Dr. Cassetta as we were both living in the Bronx. In reading the tributes I note what a wonderful teacher he was (the highest profession in my opinion) but the observation I find most descriptive is KINDNESS. I can think of no higher quality in any human. Dick was a most KIND man.
My deepest sympathy and prayers to Carol and "children" whom I knew as a young and beautiful family.
May He Rest In Peace

I first met Dick working in his driveway under a car. I was returning a limousine he had arranged for my friend's wedding. I was the Best Man. It was here that I first met, in the Summer of 1962, my future colleague of 30 something years at the College of New Rochelle. We chatted easily about the Bronx and St John's and somewhat about The College where he was about to begin his distinguished career.
He was a natural teacher, committed to the success of his students, and especially to the work being prepared for that. His loyalty to the College, to his students, his friends, to his family was itself something of a lesson he taught us simply by the powerful word of his example.
I remember fondly his support in all the years we worked together. Nothing I can say here quite captures how constant was his friendship, and how total his professional efforts for the good of his students, his colleagues, and the College. The memories I have of his authenticity and his care I will cherish, and attempt to honor in my own life,
My prayers are of thanksgiving for knowing him, and for his family who will miss him.
