Obituary of Rev. Brother James Austin Finnegan, C.F.C., K.C.H.S.
Rev. Brother James Austin Finnegan C.F.C., K.C.H.S. passed away on June 27, 2018. Brother Finnegan was born on March 28, 1944 in Buffalo, NY, the son of Paul and Ruth Murray Finnegan. He is a graduate of St. Mary Elementary, Essex Catholic High School, Iona College where he graduated with a BA in Classical Languages and Montclair State University where he received his MA in Student Personnel Services. Brother Finnegan entered the congregation on July 1, 1962 and took his final vows on August 27, 1969. His ministry took him too many positions including Edmund Rice Hall, New Rochelle, NY, Catholic Memorial High School, West Roxbury, MA, Vice Principal, Essex Catholic High School, Newark, NJ, Principal Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School, Schenectady, NY, Bergan Catholic High School, Oradell, NJ, Assoc. Superintendent of Schools, Archdiocese of Newark, Leader, Trinity Catholic High School Community and a member of Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Iona College Community, Project Director Edmund Rice Institute, Coordinator of Boards of Directors of Edmund Rice Institute, Liaison for Atlantic Coast Boards, Member of Edmund Rice Christian Brothers of North America, Iona Prep School Community and Assistant Director of Advancement. Brother Finnegan is survived by his sister Nancy McCabe. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Thomas. A wake will be held at the Iona Prep Chapel at 255 Wilmot Rd., New Rochelle, NY 10804, on Sunday July 1, from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale, NY on Monday at 10 AM. Internment to follow at Christian Brothers Cemetery in West Park, NY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to The Christian Brothers Foundation, 260 Wilmot Road, New Rochelle, NY 10804.
